Piedmont

Piedmont, located in northwest Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's most exquisite fine wines. With its breath-taking landscapes, diverse terroir, and a rich winemaking heritage, Piedmont offers a captivating range of wines that captivate the senses. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their exceptional quality.

One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Their wines, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, are synonymous with excellence and showcase the complexity and elegance of Piedmontese wines. Another esteemed vineyard is Vietti, known for its iconic Barolo wines that beautifully reflect the region's terroir and winemaking traditions.

Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barolo is often referred to as the "King of Wines" due to its full-bodied structure, intense aromatics, and potential for aging. Notable vineyards like Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, and Paolo Scavino craft outstanding Barolo wines that capture the essence of the region. Barbaresco, a neighboring appellation, offers equally exceptional wines with a slightly softer and more approachable character. Renowned vineyards such as Produttori del Barbaresco and Gaja produce remarkable Barbaresco wines that exemplify the region's winemaking prowess.

Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.

Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.

Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. Whether you're savoring a prestigious Barolo, an elegant Barbaresco, or a delightful Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont's wines offer a remarkable journey of flavors and a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this captivating region.

The aromatically complex, medium to full-bodied, dark garnet-colored 1998 Barbaresco Bricco Asili-Bricco Asili offers intense aromas of soy, black cherries, tobacco, spice box, licorice, and incense. With ripe but noticeable tannin and excellent length, this potentially outstanding Barolo needs several more years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2014.

Fully evolved and tarry. Really confident. Dry end, tangy, a very pure expression of Nebbiolo. Some luscious fruit. Transparent.

So perfumed and beautiful. Smells like an outstanding Burgundy. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long fruity and focused finish. Hint of raisin. Beautiful balance and class. Better in a couple of years. Even better than I remember.--1998 Piedmont blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2010. 1,000 cases made. -JS

Vinous (93)

Saturated bright ruby. Multidimensional nose of cassis, blackberry, raspberry, violet, espresso, mint and spicy oak. Uncanny sweetness and lushness but harmonious acids give the berry and spice flavors great snap and verve. Hugely concentrated yet quite suave and light on its feet. Finishes with rich, dusty tannins and outstanding length.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)

An impressive effort, the 1998's only misfortune is being surrounded by so many other exceptional wines. It is a rich, concentrated Barolo, similar in style to the 1997, but more complex, giving the impression of being much more youthful in its toasted oak, spice, mineral and dark, ripe fruit flavors. With some air this is approachable now, but I would hold off for a few more years.

Vinous (88)

Medium red, with a hint of amber. Spicy aromas of wild red berries and cherry. Juicy, rich and sweet but backward. Fatter than the '99 Camp Gros but slightly hard, finishing with dusty oak tannins, very good length and a hint of dryness.

The very complete and immensely enjoyable 1998 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda presents a superbly elegant nose of violets, menthol, spices, licorice, smoke and underbrush. It comes across as soft yet persistent, and displays beautifully delineated flavors of rich dark fruit, with a balsamic note that develops in the glass, finishing with great length and overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.

Vinous (93+)

Deep red. Pungent, vibrant nose dominated by currant and cola syrup. Dense, impressively concentrated and rather powerful; its superb sweetness is leavened by penetrating vinosity. A superb example of the '98 vintage at its best. Finishes impressively long, with major but fine tannins that reach the entire palate. This wine should gain in complexity over the next decade.

Distinguished for its incomparable quality, the Revello Barolo Giachini 1998 is an exceptional Italian red wine from the Barolo region, famed for world-class Nebbiolo grapes. With each sip, indulge in the radiant garnet hue, captivating aroma of crushed berries, hints of rose petal and truffle, and the harmonious balance of tannin and acidity. Given the advancement of two decades, the full-bodied Revello Barolo Giachini 1998 is now supremely refined, embodying the elegance of old-world winemaking. Perfectly stored and matured, this extraordinary Barolo represents the pinnacle of Italian winemaking artistry.
