The 2004 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is simply as profound as wine can be. Period. Strikingly layered, perfumed and sensual to the core, the 2004 has it all. Next to the straight Falletto, the Rocche is more refined but also quite a bit more backward as well. Mint, rose petal and melted road tar grace the exquisite finish. The level of intensity here is simply mind-blowing. At ten years of age, the 2004 Rocche is a youngster, but it is clearly a wine of divine inspiration. A powerful, sinewy wine, it captures the essence of this Serralunga vineyard in its autumn leaves, iron, licorice, tar and dark fruit. There is plenty of richness and depth here as well, but the wine possesses an additional level of brute force and thrust. This too is a beautifully expressive wine loaded with personality. As is the case with Boglietti's other Barolos in this vintage, the Arione develops nicely in the glass. Ideally a few years of cellaring are warranted, but my impression is that some of the wine's tannins may never melt away completely.

The 2004 Barolo Parafada is the softest and most open-knit of Massolino's Barolos. At the time, the Parafada was done partly in French oak, so it has sleeker contours than the other wines in the range, yet it also retains a lovely sense of freshness. Crushed flowers, licorice and spices meld into a core of supple, nicely layered fruit. The 2004 should drink well for at least another decade. This is a strong showing, especially considering Massolino was making the Parafada in a slightly different style that was not really their strongest suit.

Wild and exotic, the 2004 is at once mature and yet so young. The closest analogy I can give is an older Champagne that has recently been disgorged.
