The 2018 Les Hauts de Smith is a powerhouse. I recall a much more open-knit wine from en primeur, but the bottled 2018 packs a serious punch. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, cloves, gravel and licorice give the 2018 a distinctly brooding feel. Les Hauts is conceived as a restaurant wine, but the 2018 is far from an easygoing example. I love this château, and the 2019 Château Soutard-Cadet is another brilliant wine that's in the same ballpark as the 2018. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as a rich, powerful nose of ripe black fruits, scorched earth, spicy oak, graphite, and damp earth, it's rich and concentrated, yet the purity is brilliant, it has silky and perfectly ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Scoring 98 points from the Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 97 points from Decanter's Jane Anson and 18.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, this 2009 "remains the benchmark Suduiraut of recent years".
Still taking a while to open up fully, indicting a very long life ahead, it has a "divine bouquet... building layer upon layer" (NM) that "seductively unfurls" (WA) with gorgeous notes of honey, dried pineapple, chamomile tea, yellow flowers and nectarine. The rich, viscous and satiny texture of the palate is "effortlessly" countered by a "beautiful razor-sharp line of acidity" (NM) that gives this Sauternes bags of freshness. With "epic length and depth" (WA) on the finish, this is a wine that will span generations with Neal Martin giving it a drinking window up to 2070.

The 2014 Suduiraut was picked from 12 September to 30 October. It is very similar to the bottle tasted blind at the Southwold tasting, offering a gorgeous array of almond, quince and wild honey, perhaps just less of the orange blossom here but still utterly captivating. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, as animated as the 2015 with great precision and tension towards the finish. Perhaps this is a little sharper than the 2015 at the moment without the same roundness or depth, but it is just as good. 150gm/L residual sugar, 13.8% alcohol. An exotic melange of apricot jam, orange confit, spice, candied ginger and pineapple all soar out of the glass. The 2019 is creamy and intense, but not at all heavy. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is developing beautifully on the nose, perhaps shunning its nascent opulence and manifesting much more intriguing brambly black fruit, black truffle, iodine and seaweed scents. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, pliant tannins, dark berry fruit and a surprisingly structured, not austere but serious finish. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts from winemaker Sebastian Cathiard was showing some reduction like de Montille's Malconsorts: rather animally on the nose with a touch of rubber, missing the delineation it might have otherwise possessed. Returning after ten minutes, that feral aspect ebbs away. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and sweet tannin. It shakes off that reduction to reveal a nicely defined, quite voluminous finish that is bursting with red fruit. The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has just a little less new oak than the Les Suchots this year. The aromatics are more backward and recalcitrant than the Les Suchots and demanded more coaxing from the glass. There is a sense of depth to the fruit, almost an opacity that suggests the fruit will only gradually open up. It was difficult wrenching your nose away from the glass! The palate is beautifully balanced with succulent fleshy tannin, voluminous in the mouth with immense concentration counterbalanced by a keen line of acidity. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has the most cerebral nose of any Cathiard Premier Cru, scents of black fruit intermingling with ash, sous-bois and light iodine scents. It also seems the most mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, unerring symmetry and a killer sense of symmetry that is utterly beguiling.
