The white of the vintage is the 2016 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc. It’s a magical elixir based on 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris, and 5% Sémillon that was brought up in 50% new oak. Deep, layered, and powerful, yet also vibrant, it has sensational notes of crushed citrus, liquid rock, white flower, lime pith, and honeyed grapefruit. It shows the classic, balanced style of the vintage yet offers thrilling depth and concentration and is a tour de force in white Bordeaux. Drink it any time over the coming two decades. Get it if you can!

  • Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2021 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

This has so much blossom honey and white flowers with limes and other citrus. Stone and mineral undertones. Subtle passion fruit. A truly complex and great nose. Full-bodied and compact with fruit, phenolics and fresh acidity. Just a touch of sea salt. Very long and persistent. If you close your eyes, it’s like a great red wine. One of the best whites ever to come from here. 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% semillon, 5% sauvignon gris. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

  • Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2023 (3x150cl)

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)

Distinctive as ever, right at the top of what Pessac Léognan Blanc can deliver. Structured, fleshy white peach and pear, waves of salted cracker and sage, creamy texture, great length, just a brilliant wine. A buy.
  • Smith Haut Lafitte Les Hauts de Smith 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

Inky dark fruit, gravel, smoke, spice, grilled herbs, lavender and menthol all flesh out in this rich, supple Merlot-driven blend from Smith Haut Lafitte. The 2017 is a flat-out delicious wine. Inky dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice and savory overtones from the Cabernet all infuse the 2017 with notable character. The 2017 finishes with a good bit of structure, which ensures it will drink well for a number of years.
  • Smith Haut Lafitte Les Hauts de Smith 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2018 Les Hauts de Smith is a powerhouse. I recall a much more open-knit wine from en primeur, but the bottled 2018 packs a serious punch. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, cloves, gravel and licorice give the 2018 a distinctly brooding feel. Les Hauts is conceived as a restaurant wine, but the 2018 is far from an easygoing example. There is plenty of depth, power and structure. A burst of dark red fruit laced with floral overtones punctuates the finish.
  • Smith Haut Lafitte Les Hauts de Smith 2020 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2020 Les Hauts de Smith, 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, is plump, juicy and quite forward. Succulent red cherry, cedar, cinnamon and dried flowers are front and center. Bright acids play off the ripe, racy fruit very nicely. Plush tannins wrap it all together in style.

  • Soutard-Cadet 2019 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

I love this château, and the 2019 Château Soutard-Cadet is another brilliant wine that's in the same ballpark as the 2018. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as a rich, powerful nose of ripe black fruits, scorched earth, spicy oak, graphite, and damp earth, it's rich and concentrated, yet the purity is brilliant, it has silky and perfectly ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. As I wrote from barrel, it's going to benefit from just 2-4 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 20, 25, if not 30 years of overall longevity.

  • Stephane Magnien Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

Distinguished by its elegance, the Stephane Magnien Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 exemplifies the quintessence of Burgundian winemaking. Crafted in the esteemed Clos Saint-Denis vineyard, a classified Grand Cru in Burgundy's Morey-Saint-Denis region, this laudable libation is the handiwork of Stephane Magnien - fourth-generation vigneron in this family-run winery.

Harvested by hand, the grapes following traditional vinification are matured in oak barrels, yielding a splendidly nuanced Pinot Noir. With pronounced aromas of wild berries punctuated by earthy undertones, its complexity on the palate is equally striking. Bursting with ripe red fruit and layered with notes of spice, its graceful tannins lead to an enduring finish.

The Stephane Magnien Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 is a prime example of Stephane Magnien’s commitment and respect for the terroir, expressing the sublime characteristics of this esteemed vineyard. A stellar selection for discerning connoisseurs!

  • Suduiraut 2009 (6x75cl)

Scoring 98 points from the Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 97 points from Decanter's Jane Anson and 18.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, this 2009 "remains the benchmark Suduiraut of recent years".

Still taking a while to open up fully, indicting a very long life ahead, it has a "divine bouquet... building layer upon layer" (NM) that "seductively unfurls" (WA) with gorgeous notes of honey, dried pineapple, chamomile tea, yellow flowers and nectarine. The rich, viscous and satiny texture of the palate is "effortlessly" countered by a "beautiful razor-sharp line of acidity" (NM) that gives this Sauternes bags of freshness. With "epic length and depth" (WA) on the finish, this is a wine that will span generations with Neal Martin giving it a drinking window up to 2070.

  • Suduiraut 2014 (6x75cl)
    (6x75cl) 2014

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2014 Suduiraut was picked from 12 September to 30 October. It is very similar to the bottle tasted blind at the Southwold tasting, offering a gorgeous array of almond, quince and wild honey, perhaps just less of the orange blossom here but still utterly captivating. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, as animated as the 2015 with great precision and tension towards the finish. Perhaps this is a little sharper than the 2015 at the moment without the same roundness or depth, but it is just as good. 150gm/L residual sugar, 13.8% alcohol. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château.

  • Suduiraut 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)

The 2019 Suduiraut is absolutely stunning. Rich, heady and explosive, but in the vibrant style that marks the wines of today, Suduiraut is a real head-turner. An exotic melange of apricot jam, orange confit, spice, candied ginger and pineapple all soar out of the glass. The 2019 is creamy and intense, but not at all heavy. The 130 grams of residual sugar are perfectly integrated. Magnificent.

  • Suduiraut 2023 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (100)

The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. It can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring or cellared for decades. The 2023 is a timeless wine that is among the most notable successes of the year.

  • Suenen Les Robarts Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Harvested at desired phenolic maturity without elevated sugar levels—a scenario increasingly rare in contemporary Champagne—the 2014 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cramant Les Robarts ranks among the greatest successes of this consistently reliable cuvée. It unfurls from the glass with aromas of pear, peach and lemon oil, complemented by dried white flowers mingled with pastry notes. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it is elegantly muscular and mouthwatering, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Disgorged in January 2021 with a dosage of two grams per liter, extended time on cork has worked wonders.

  • Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Aligote 2023 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (88)

The 2023 Bourgogne Aligoté was bottled in April. It has a clean and sharp bouquet—a little more malic, perhaps from the fruit located up in the Hautes-Côtes. The palate is well balanced, a little oily in texture, with fine acidity and a lighter, sour lemon- and ginger-tinged finish. Enjoy this over the next four or five years.

  • Sylvain Cathiard Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is developing beautifully on the nose, perhaps shunning its nascent opulence and manifesting much more intriguing brambly black fruit, black truffle, iodine and seaweed scents. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, pliant tannins, dark berry fruit and a surprisingly structured, not austere but serious finish. Drinking beautifully now, this clearly has an evolution that will be fascinating to follow. Tasted at Maufoux in Chablis.

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey offers up a lovely bouquet of cassis, blackberries, warm spices, licorice and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with superb concentration and an earthier, chewier profile than the Murgers this year—despite the finesse of its tannins.

Very sensual and extraordinarily pure, this is a brilliant RSV.

  • Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts from winemaker Sebastian Cathiard was showing some reduction like de Montille's Malconsorts: rather animally on the nose with a touch of rubber, missing the delineation it might have otherwise possessed. Returning after ten minutes, that feral aspect ebbs away. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and sweet tannin. It shakes off that reduction to reveal a nicely defined, quite voluminous finish that is bursting with red fruit. If it does pull through it will deserve a very good mark and I suspect it will do just that.

  • Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96-98)

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has just a little less new oak than the Les Suchots this year. The aromatics are more backward and recalcitrant than the Les Suchots and demanded more coaxing from the glass. There is a sense of depth to the fruit, almost an opacity that suggests the fruit will only gradually open up. It was difficult wrenching your nose away from the glass! The palate is beautifully balanced with succulent fleshy tannin, voluminous in the mouth with immense concentration counterbalanced by a keen line of acidity. Very persistent in the mouth, this will be immense once in bottle. Cellar for as long as you can.

  • Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has the most cerebral nose of any Cathiard Premier Cru, scents of black fruit intermingling with ash, sous-bois and light iodine scents. It also seems the most mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, unerring symmetry and a killer sense of symmetry that is utterly beguiling. It is endowed with the backbone one expects from a Malconsorts and a persistence all of its own. Heavenly.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
