Alsace

Alsace, located in northeastern France, is renowned for its exceptional fine wines. With its unique blend of French and German influences, Alsace offers a captivating selection of wines that embody the region's rich heritage, distinct terroir, and dedication to quality winemaking.

One of the most famous vineyards in Alsace is Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, known for producing exceptional wines that showcase the region's terroir and commitment to organic and biodynamic practices. Other renowned vineyards in Alsace include Domaine Marcel Deiss, Domaine Weinbach, and Domaine Trimbach, each celebrated for their outstanding wines that capture the essence of the region.

Alsace is celebrated for its white wines, which account for the majority of its production. The region's flagship grape varieties, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, flourish in the region's cool climate and unique soils. These wines are known for their aromatic intensity, crisp acidity, and expressive fruit flavors. Notable appellations like Alsace Grand Cru further highlight the region's dedication to producing exceptional white wines.

Alsace is also recognized for its sparkling wines, known as Crémant d'Alsace. Crafted using traditional methods, these sparkling wines exhibit finesse, delicate bubbles, and a refreshing character. They are produced from a variety of grape varieties, including Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, offering a delightful alternative to Champagne.

While Alsace is predominantly known for its white wines, it also produces exceptional red wines, primarily from the Pinot Noir grape. These reds showcase elegance, finesse, and a vibrant fruit profile. Vineyards like Domaine Albert Boxler and Domaine Ostertag are celebrated for their outstanding red wines that highlight the region's potential for producing world-class Pinot Noir.

Indulge in the allure of Alsace's fine wines and experience the exceptional quality, distinct character, and the region's dedication to crafting remarkable wines. Whether you're savoring a vibrant Riesling, an aromatic Gewürztraminer, or an elegant Pinot Noir, Alsace wines promise a journey of flavors that capture the essence of this enchanting wine region.

Vinous (85+)

Mint, lime, herbs and earth on the nose. Quite dry and lean in the mouth. Possesses good balancing acidity but comes across as a bit skinny today, and slightly harsh on the finish. Needs another year or so in bottle.

Vinous (96)

Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least.

Vinous (90)

Good, bright green-tinged straw-yellow. Sensational nose features all the Alsace food groups: white stone fruit, minerals, anise, flowers and diesel fuel. Pure and still very fresh on the palate, with a wonderfully fine-grained texture to its austere flavors of white stone fruit and licorice. Given lift and definition by sharp acidity and a spicy note of white pepper. I found this to offer a rare combination of density and delineation. It finishes with outstanding rising length and great finesse, but it's almost harsh in its total lack of residual sugar. Very much a gothic steeple rather than a baroque dome. According to Jean Trimbach, the 1999 was, up until then, the toughest Cuvée Fréderic Emile to sell, as with its very low residual sugar it was very rigid and tight, with its acidity a bit overwhelming on release. "It took 14 years for this wine to open, and it has remained Chablis-like ever since", he told me. This wine reminded me of the Clos Ste. Hune of the same vintage.

Vinous (90+)

Rather reticent, slightly exotic nose hints at pineapple, orange oil and caraway seed. Very tightly wound and minerally; possesses noteworthy thickness of texture but is extremely closed today and uncompromisingly dry. Should blossom with four or five years of further bottle aging.

Vinous (93)

Exotic aromas of orange, apricot, smoke and stone, with hints of dried fruits. Sweeter and more glyceral than the foregoing samples, but this has essentially the same residual sugar. The strong wet stone flavor gives the wine uncanny energy in the middle palate. A big, powerful, very long and aromatic riesling that splendidly showcases this superb grand cru site.

Vinous (93)

Bright deep yellow. Smoky camphor, peach and a hint of honeyed pineapple on the showy nose. Enters the mouth fresh, lively and precise, then turns slightly austere, showing noteworthy tannic bite to its orchard fruit and sweet spice flavors. A touch of marmaladey botrytis adds complexity on the lingering, ripe, rich finish. In 2001, high-quality botrytis targeted the Pinot Gris, so that a Sélection de Grains Nobles was produced with the grapes from the vines nearest to the river Thur; it was the grapes from Zind-Humbrecht's other wines in the Clos that were used to produce the bottling I describe here. Check out these numbers: only 13.6% alcohol, 30 g/l residual sugar, and 6.1 g/l total acidity. Utterly irresistible right now; in fact, I don’t think there is much to gain by holding onto it any longer. I remember first tasting this wine when it was released, and it struck me then as uncharacteristically ready to drink from the outset, but the wine's iodiney minerality is starting to take center stage from the fruit elements. In 2001, a cold and rainy September had many producers anxious, but the warmest October on record to that point ensured a clean, glitch-free harvest. “This was a rare year in which we were out harvesting in tee shirts, thanks to 28°C days in October,” Olivier Humbrecht reminisced. And at 36 hectoliters per hectare, 2001 was also a very generous year for production by the standards of the Clos.
