Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The Bizot Vosne-Romanee 1994 is a magnificent reflection of the arduous, meticulous labour of legendary winemaker Jean-Yves Bizot. Refined and elegantly structured, this single varietal Pinot Noir originated in Vosne-Romanee, the heartland of outstanding Bourgogne wines. Painstakingly hand-harvested from vines rooted in marl and limestone-rich soils, the grapes used in the Bizot Vosne-Romanee 1994 were traditionally vinified using spontaneous fermentation and aged in used oak barrels for eighteen months to enhance its complex profile. The end result is an inviting medley of black cherries, soft rose petal notes, layered subtly with black truffle undertones, culminating in a prolonged, pleasing finish. With the winemaker's devotion to low-intervention techniques, this stellar vintage encapsulates Bizot's philosophy of creating wines that truly express their terroir. Garnering admiration from critics worldwide, Bizot Vosne-Romanee 1994 triumphantly epitomises exquisite Burgundian winemaking. |

Vinous (94)The 1994 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is exotic, deep and so distinctive. Oily and rich in the glass, with striking texture, the 1994 is superb. Orange peel, hazelnut, chamomile, dried savory herbs and tropical inflections all come alive in the glass. It is a superb wine from a year where hail, botrytis and mildew were among the challenges. |

Wine Advocate (84)The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 1994 La Tâche Grand Cru does not transcend the limitations of this challenging vintage, offering up a rather pedestrian bouquet of red-black fruit and licorice, becoming more and more dominated by its lavish application of high-quality new oak as it sits in the glass and never revealing any of the aromatic drama of which La Tâche is capable. On the palate, the wine is chunky and foursquare, with bright acids and a certain tannic asperity that suggests this is unlikely to change in any critical respect in the foreseeable future. |

Vinous (88)The 1994 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is an odd wine in what I feel was not Christophe's finest year. It has a strange exotic nose whilst the palate is rustic and meaty, fully matured with an uncharacteristically coarse finish that does not really translate the quality of the vineyard. Drink bottles soon. Tasted at a private lunch in London. |
