A somewhat controversial Haut-Brion, this wine reached full maturity at a shockingly fast pace and seems now to be giving signs of cracking up. A very earthy, melted asphalt, creosote-like nose intermixed with compost, decaying autumnal vegetation, and herb-tinged fruit is actually more appealing than it might sound. In the mouth the wine is fleshy, medium-bodied, relatively lush, but the garnet color is showing considerable amber, and the finish starts to dry out after the wine sits in the glass for just a mere five minutes. And of course, I have tasted this wine from pristinely stored bottles, so I suspect those that have been less than perfectly stored are probably already in serious decline. Anticipated maturity: Now. Tasted at the château, the 1983 Montrose, picked between 27 September and 13 October, was quite deep at the core but showing some bricking on the rim. The nose feels fatigued and leathery, an ephemeral bouquet that could blow away in the lightest wind. The palate is light-bodied, angular and hollow, a large hole where the fruit ought to be and then it tapers to a severe, raw and slightly vegetal finish. Robert Parker lambasted the 1983, which given the reputation of the property and the fact that it was not a terrible growing season like the following year, should have been much much better. This is outshone by the 1984—enough said. Tasted September 2016.

This wine continues to be one of the most indifferent Trotanoy's made in the last thirty years. I am at a loss to understand why the 1983 is so muted, dull, and monolithic. It possesses a medium-ruby color, and a straightforward, indifferent nose of berry fruit and spices. Shallow but pleasant, with soft, uninspiring flavors presented in a compact, straightforward style, this wine finishes briskly. Given the vintage and the greatness of this vineyard, Trotanoy remains one of 1983's most notable disappointments. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Last tasted, 4/93.
