Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." An attractive mid lemon colour. The nose is a little more backward, but the palate delivers impressive tension along with the usual complete mouthful of the purest white fruit. Tension pursues all the way through and the ripeness is perfect. This is not the most fruit forward of Chaumées I have tasted here, but has all the qualities for ageing well. Pale colour with a lime time. A fresh raw fruit energy to the nose. The white fruit expands vividly across the palate, the same light toast from the oak, but nicely integrated, this is a Chassagne with considerable charm that can be drunk early, but has a fine thread of minerality through to the back. At the moment, I am finding that the oak is playing too strong a hand, rather dumbing down the fruit which is certainly there. 45% new wood is not in itself excessive, but it makes the fruit darker and heavier.
